Sundae that’s better than McDonald’s

Hello foodies,

Watch out, a little sweet madness ahead!! Today we’re going full-on nostalgic!!

Here comes the Sundae that’s better than McDonald’s!

I have to tell you…

This recipe is a real Proustian madeleine for me.

Yes, yes, I admit it! Something from McDonald’s!! I’ve always loved the chocolate Sundae with crunchy peanuts on top! Very often, when I was younger 😉 , I would only go to that American fast food chain for that!

We can get creative

Today, the sundae is still on McDonald’s menu, and you can also find its variation in the famous McFlurry. Well, now you can make that at home too with my recipe! Once you know how to make the basic ice cream, all you have to do is choose your toppings…

An easy recipe

What’s more, this recipe only needs 2 or 3 ingredients… I’ll explain everything!!

While making this recipe, I felt like digging into the history of that famous American chain. So I’m going to share a few facts here. Yep, it’s part of the culture in a way!

A few facts along the way

McDonald’s Corporation is a multinational fast-food company headquartered in Chicago. It was founded by Ray Kroc in 1952 after acquiring the rights to a restaurant chain operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald. In 1955, the first McDonald’s opened in Des Plaines, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

Today, McDonald’s is the largest fast-food group, ahead of Restaurant Brands International (Burger King) and Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut). In 2022, its revenue exceeded \$23 billion and it had 40,200 restaurants in over 100 countries.

The origin of the Sundae

As for the sundae, it’s a traditional American frozen dessert recipe, topped with various ingredients like fruit coulis, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, chopped pecans, peanuts, hazelnuts or other toppings.

A variation of ice cream, gelato, soft serve, or milkshake, the origin of the sundae is uncertain and controversial. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it likely comes from a distortion of the word sunday, either because it was originally a specialty served on Sundays, or because it was leftover ice cream from Sunday sold at a lower price on Monday.

According to the most common explanation, the sundae was created in response to the ban on using soda fountains on Sundays in some U.S. states or cities, due to American Blue Laws (religious and social laws on Sunday rest, related to the Shabbat treaty of Abrahamic religion), and therefore also a ban on ice cream sodas on Sundays (soda served with a scoop of ice cream, very popular in the late 19th century in the United States). Let’s get back to our better-than-McDo sundae recipe!

As I said at the beginning of this article, it’s a 2- or 3-ingredient recipe. You’ll need heavy whipping cream, mascarpone and sweetened condensed milk. That’s it! And you can even swap the mascarpone with full-fat crùme fraüche or the same amount of heavy cream. In that case, you’ll only need two ingredients! So you see, it’s truly a very easy recipe to make

The toppings

For the sundae version, serve the ice cream with the toppings you like: chocolate fudge sauce, salted butter caramel, berry coulis or even praliné! Add finely chopped peanuts, praline, or fresh fruit, for example.

And to make a McFlurry, just top your sundae with crushed Oreo cookies, Daim candy, KitKat, or M\&Ms. Go with whatever version you like. The base ice cream stays the same. And with this recipe, you’ll get a Sundae or McFlurry with “controlled” ingredients. I won’t tell you it’s healthy or diet-friendly, but at least you know what’s in it…

By adding a scoop of Caribbean coconut sorbet, you bring an exotic touch that elevates this nostalgic dessert. Imagine the smoothness of coconut blending with the richness of chocolate
pure bliss! So, ready to dive into this delicious adventure?

Necessary utensils:

A stand mixer with a whisk (or a hand mixer and a large mixing bowl),

A spatula

And an ice cream maker or a sorbet machine.

Nothing too tricky!

Well, I think I’ve told you everything! Don’t hesitate to leave a comment below with your favorite version…
